Woven with Raw Silk

Tibet name: Thag-drub-ma

This type of Thangka is woven with raw silk as the warp and coloured refined silk as the weft, using an ingenious technique called “continuous warp and broken weft,“ which creates a carved and engraved effect and gives a double-sided three-dimensional feel. It has been praised as “silk carved by a knife.“
